MARCH
UNITED METHODIST INITIATIVE TO END OBSTETRIC FISTULA IS LAUNCHED
Yearlong campaign is sponsored by the General Board of Church and Society and funded
by the United Nations Foundation.  Rev. Jill Wiley, minister from Brockton MA, is engaged
as a consultant to direct "Operation Healing Hope" which joins efforts aimed at meeting
the goal of UNFPA (UN Population Fund) to end fistula by 2015.

APRIL
RESOURCES DEVELOPED FOR TARGETING TEN ANNUAL CONFERENCES
Campaign's aims are education and advocacy about ending obstetric fistula and promoting
issues of maternal and infant health.  Conferences identified for the initiative's primary thrust
are: Central Pennsylvania, Central Texas, Eastern Pennysylvania, Greater New Jersey, New England,
North Carolina, Pacific Northwest, Peninsula-Delaware, West Ohio and Western New York.

MAY
EDUCATION EFFORTS BEGIN AT TARGET ANNUAL CONFERENCES
Jill Wiley discusses obstetric fistula initative with leaders of Liberian congregations in the
Greater New Jersey Annual Conference.


JUNE
 MORE ANNUAL CONFERENCE VISITS, QUILT PROJECT TAKES FORM
 Bishop Jane Middleton of Central PA Annual Conference admires sample baby quilt for
 OHH quilting project. Operation Healing Hope goes cross-country to target conferences.

 JULY
  OHH IS LIBERIA-BOUND!
  OHH representatives travel to West Africa to see efforts being made in Liberia to prevent
  obstetric fistula and to treat and re-integrate survivors.

 AUGUST
  OHH INVITED ON FISTULA REPAIR TEAM VISIT TO GANTA MISSION ON LIBERIAN BORDER
  Volunteers in Mission team from Central TX conference perform marathon surgeries in Liberia.

SEPTEMBER
OHH CAMPAIGN PROVIDES UPDATES TO TWO KEY GROUPS IN NORTH CAROLINA
Presentations are made at Lake Junaluska to the General Board of Church & Society
Human Welfare Work Area group and to the North Carolina Conference Church & Society
board.


 OCTOBER
  ADVENT STUDY KITS SENT TO CHURCHES ALL OVER THE COUNTRY
  Quilt groups from over sixty-five congregation in 23 states request "Advent Visions"
  Bible Study and Baby Quilt Kits.

 NOVEMBER
  CAPITOL HILL SCREENING OF AWARD-WINNING FILM AND BRIEFING RE: CHILD MARRIAGE  
  U.S. Senator Bob Corker of Tennessee and a key aide listen as OHH reps and colleagues
  discuss the issue of obstetric fistula prior to a showing of "A Walk to Beautiful".

 DECEMBER
  OHH CHRISTMAS MEDITATION: WHAT CHILD IS THIS?
  Advent Visions quilters are encouraged to display baby quilts locally through Ephiphany
  before sending them to Operation Healing Hope for shipment to Camphor United Methodist
  Mission in Liberia.

OPERATION HEALING HOPE is an initiative of education and advocacy about the hidden epidemic of obstetric fistula. The year-long campaign is sponsored by the General Board of Church and Society of the United Methodist Church and is funded by the United Nations Foundation. In partnership with  the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and Women's Ministries of the National Council of Churches, OHH shares the long-term aim of eradicating obstetric fistula by the Year 2015.
